Cons Associated With Term Life Insurance

2009-09-02

The world of life insurance can be a scary one for many reasons. There is, of course, the fact that it forces a look at one's own mortality, but there is also the mind-numbing array of options to consider. The first choice one needs to make when selecting life insurance is whether to go with term life insurance or a more permanent life insurance policy. Then there is the cost; one look at a term life insurance quote compared against a whole life policy quote can send many people straight in the direction of term life coverage. While each has its advantages and disadvantages, for the purpose of this article we will focus on the cons of term life insurance.

Possibly the most disheartening aspect of term life coverage is that the only way it pays out is if the policyholder dies. Therefore, the person holding the policy will never actually benefit from it other than having the peace of mind that things would be taken care of should something unexpected happen. With whole life insurance there can be additional advantages to the policyholder that he/she can enjoy during his/her lifetime, including the ability to borrow against the policy or use the policy as a means of savings. This opportunity can be a great comfort if an unexpected financial difficulty arises. Term life insurance offers no such option.

Another disadvantage to consider about term life coverage is that once the 'term' comes to an end, the former holder is left with nothing to show for the investment. There is often an option to renew the insurance, but the term life insurance quote at this point will be higher because the holder is older and may have more heath concerns. Sometimes, if the former holder has become too unhealthy or has become too old, the option to renew will not even be available. Unfortunately, at this point one may have very few to no life insurance choices and any available will be very expensive.

So it would seem that while the low cost of term life insurance can be enticing there is a great deal to consider before making this important decision. Term life insurance is insurance with no frills. For some, whole life insurance is simply not affordable and term life coverage can provide a sense of security for a period of time. One must always keep in mind that with life insurance you get what you pay for (or don't get it, in the case of term insurance). It may be advantageous to cut costs elsewhere in order to invest in a more permanent peace of mind.
