Gender And Its Effect On Term Life Insurance Quotes

2011-12-23

Many people wonder what goes into term life insurance quotes - why are some people given much lower quotes than others. Term life insurance companies have to pay when a person dies, so they are more willing to extend cheaper coverage to people who are likely to live longer, so they use information like health, age and even gender to determine how long they think their clients will live. Because women tend to outlive men, they usually have lower term life insurance quotes, even in the face of rising insurance costs.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the life expectancy of a woman is about 80 years. Men, on the other hand, have a life expectancy rate of not quite 75 years. The reason for this chalks up to both biology and behavior. Biological differences between men and women show that women tend to have larger brains and are better able to control anger and similar emotions that will end them up in dangerous situations -- like bar fights or back yard brawls that could end up getting them killed.

Women are also less likely to have dangerous jobs, higher stress levels and substance abuse problems than men. Although there are about equal numbers of men and women in the workforce today, men still typically have the most dangerous jobs. They are the ones fixing telephone poles and working construction on busy highways. While seeing a woman in one of these jobs is certainly no anomaly, statistics still tell us that men are more likely than women to be in these positions, and women can reap the benefits on term life insurance quotes. Similarly, women are better able to keep their stress under wraps then men, who have higher stress levels, and possibly because of this, higher substance abuse problems.

What does all this mean? It means that women tend to have cheaper term life insurance quotes because they usually live longer, so term life insurance companies can give them a break on their rates. In fact, older men may pay as much as $1,500 more for term life insurance than women!

Because term life insurance is relatively inexpensive for women, some families may consider insuring women who have never had life insurance before. Even women who do not work can help protect their families with a term life insurance policy. Such a policy will provide help with funeral costs and the ability for a mother to provide for her husband and children if she passes away. In fact, in light of rising insurance costs, a family who can only afford to get life insurance on one parent may choose the mother because of the less expensive policies.
