How To Get Term Life Insurance Rates Overseas

2010-08-27

Term life insurance rates vary greatly from person to person based on a number of factors including age, health and overall risk. Depending on the company and the person involved, it is possible for these rates to range from extremely reasonable to overly expensive. Term life insurance is the original form of life insurance, and term life insurance rates are some of the most negotiable and flexible types of insurance rates available on the market. However, while finding term life insurance in the United States has now become a streamlined process bolstered in part by the prevalence of the Internet and online insurance quoting websites, for retirees and other Americans looking to move or permanently retire in another country, finding term life overseas can be a challenge.

The first thing that any American citizen seeking term life overseas must remember is that almost no American programs-Medicare, Medicaid or any form of health or life insurance-will be in force in another country. Most life insurance policies do not include the ability to take their coverage cross-border, which means that they will have no force or effect when the insured is no longer on the soil of the United States. This leaves a consumer with two choices: return to the United States at the end of their life in order to collect on the policy or seek new term life insurance quotes in another country.

While insurance companies in other countries have begun to offer term life insurance to persons who are not citizens, there are a few issues that can arise. The first is age; most of these companies will have age restrictions that prevent persons over 65, 70 or 75 from applying for and obtaining life insurance because the risk is simply too great. Companies in other countries may also charge far higher premiums than those based in the United States simply based on the fact that they are supplying insurance to a foreign national. There are a number of agencies and onshore American life insurance companies that can assist citizens in finding either cross-border coverage or reasonable rates in new countries, but these services can be expensive and do not guarantee an excellent term life insurance plan.

Finding term life insurance quotes overseas is possible, but finding reasonable rates can be a challenge. While it is sometimes possible to find a local provider or one based in the USA that will cover the distance, some Americans simply choose to do without insurance in their new country, but that can be a choice with potentially risky consequences if an unfortunate event occurs.
