The Role Of Term Life Insurance For Those That Are Terminally Ill

2010-11-03

People who purchase life insurance do so for one of two reasons. First, because the person purchasing it wants to be sure that when he or she passes, their family will not have to pay for final expenses out of pocket. Second, if the person purchasing the policy has children, purchasing a life insurance policy ensures that those children are taken care of financially. This is especially true of people who are terminally ill.

Terminally ill patients do not have a long time to decide what is best for them and their families, especially where finances are concerned. Purchasing a term life insurance policy when a person is diagnosed as terminally ill can help guarantee that the final expenses of that person are covered when he or she passes.

A term life insurance policy for the terminally ill is the best type of policy to purchase, especially if that policy has an accelerated death benefits clause. Accelerated death benefits allows the terminally ill person to receive some or all of the benefit pay out amount to cover some or all of the associated medical costs for the illness. In order for a person to be qualified for an accelerated benefits clause with a terminally ill life insurance policy, the covered person must be diagnosed with a fatal illness and have less than a year to live. If the covered person is expected to live for less than a year, the accelerated death benefits are significantly higher and can cover even more of the medical costs associated with the illness.

To obtain a terminally ill life insurance policy, the ill person must already have a life or mortgage insurance policy in place, because terminally ill policies are typically not offered separately. If the covered person receives a diagnosis of a terminal illness, he or she can add the coverage. However, some life insurance companies do offer the terminal illness benefits within the typical term life insurance policy, so all the terminally ill person needs to do in this case is provide the company with the medical certifications to begin the process of receiving the accelerated death benefits.

The only catch is that once the accelerated death benefits are received, the life insurance policy is typically terminated. On the other hand, if the covered person received the accelerated death benefits and is still living after a year since he or she was diagnosed with the terminal illness, he or she does not have to pay back those benefits or any other premiums. Term life insurance for the terminally ill has its advantages and if the proper steps are taken, those benefits can cover most, if not all, final expenses.
