Why Employer Sponsored Life Insurance Is Losing Popularity

2011-12-17

There are pros and cons with employer sponsored life insurance. Ultimately, rising costs are why people choose life insurance through their employer because it is affordable. However, many people are catching on that this is not the best policy for them since it does not include a lot of coverage and the policy ends when their employment does.

Everyone likes to think that their employer has their best interests in mind when it comes to insurance options. This is rarely the case, though. Most employers choose to offer life insurance to their employees because of tax breaks they get. No one gets individualized policies - it's all under one group umbrella.

It is much easier to get coverage under a group policy, however it does not usually include the coverage a person is looking for, which is one of the main reasons that it has dropped in popularity. And with rising costs, it is more difficult to add coverage to a group policy and make it affordable.

When a person thinks outside of employer sponsored life insurance, they will realize that there are a number of options available that last for as long as a person lives (whole or universal) or until they determine the policy should last (term). The employer-based insurance lasts as long as the job lasts, which in today's economy, is only a few years at the most.

A person needs to consider all options for their future - not just their future with a particular job. Once a person leaves an employer, it can be very difficult to get a policy because a person is now older and may have health problems that prevent them from getting a policy or makes it very expensive to obtain one.

Choosing to get a policy outside of an employer-based program is more effective. A person can name the coverage they need, determine how long the policy will last and cover all of their family members at the same time. Further, a person will be able to have the policy no matter how many times they change jobs and never lose coverage.

Despite rising costs, more and more people are choosing to get their life insurance policies on their own. The "deals" that one gets through an employer simply isn't as good as it may sound at the surface.

There are some scenarios where the policy will last past a person's employment; however these are few and far between. To ensure that a person is getting the best life insurance policy they can, the fine print must be read and a person needs to understand that there are more options available than what their employer offers.
