Jefferson National Life Insurance Company was once a prominent provider of life insurance in the United States. Despite retaining the name, Jefferson National sold off the life insurance division of the company in 2005. Anyone with a Jefferson National insurance policy had it converted into a Liberty Life Insurance policy. For some time after the sale, Liberty Life issued new policies, but after a new acquisition, halted all sales of new policies. Term life insurance quotes are thus available for neither Jefferson National nor Liberty Life.
Jefferson National Changes Business Model
The public once regarded a Jefferson National insurance policy to be one of the top policies in the United States. Jefferson National has been in business since 1937, first operating out of Indianapolis and then Louisville, Kentucky.
Conseco bought out Jefferson National in 1994, and Jefferson National became Conseco Variable Insurance Company. In 2002, Conseco underwent a management buyout, and the new board of directors reestablished the Jefferson National brand. However, three years later, Jefferson National launched a new product: a low-cost variable annuity with no load and a flat insurance fee called Monument Advisor. Jefferson National sold its life insurance policies at this time to Liberty Life Insurance Company, a division of Royal Bank Canada.
Liberty Life Takes Over
At the time when Liberty Life acquired the Jefferson National insurance policy division, it was a subsidiary of Royal Bank Canada (RBC). Liberty Life exclusively handled all U.S. life insurance policies for the Canadian banking company. Liberty Life Insurance had already been operating in the United States since 1905 before RBC purchased the company. At the time, Liberty Life Insurance Company had $1.6 billion in total assets and $18.3 billion in net life insurance previously sold.
One of the company's most popular policies was the RBS ExpressTERM, which could be purchased online in a 10, 15 or 20-year term instantly online. Term life insurance quotes were also available for four other policies online that were flexible and convertible to whole life policies.
Liberty Life is Sold
In 2011, Liberty Life was acquired by Athene Holding Ltd., which is now sponsored by a company affiliated with Apollo Global Management, LLC, an international asset management corporation. Liberty Life continues to operate today under their original name as the U.S. headquarters for the annuity reinsurance division of Athene.
Liberty Life provides customer support and processes claims for all existing life insurance policies, but no longer sells new policies.
Jefferson National was once a respected insurance company, but after several acquisitions, the policies fell to Liberty Life. After more acquisitions, Liberty Life discontinued term life insurance quotes and the issuance of new policies.
