Since 1895, the Kansas City Life Insurance Company has offered individual, annuity and group life insurance products. Currently, the company insures over 500,000 policy holders throughout the United States. Other investment products are offered through Sunset Financial Services, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kansas City Life.

For individuals who are interested in life insurance, Kansas City Life has a variety of universal life, whole life, and Kansas City Life term life insurance products. The company also has a number of group life products specifically designed for small-to-medium sized employers.

For investors who are looking for safety and a guaranteed rate of return, Kansas City Life has fixed annuity plans. Those investors who are less adverse to risk and want a higher rate of return on their investment, may be interested in the Century II line of products, including variable universal life and variable annuities, offered through the company's subsidiary, Sunset Financial Services.

Kansas City Life has a network of 2,000 agents in 48 states and the District of Columbia. These agents are supported by over 500 administrative and claim staff at the company's home office in Kansas City, Missouri. Philip Bixby currently serves as Kansas City Life's president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board. The subsidiary, Sunset Financial Services, is also based in Kansas City, Missouri.

Besides Sunset Financial Services, Kansas City Life Insurance Company also owns and operates the Old American Insurance Company, a niche insurer for the senior citizen market. In 1974, Kansas City Life purchased the Sunset Life Insurance Company of America. Since 1999, the operations of this company have been fully consolidated with Kansas City Life.

In 2009, Kansas City Life received an "A" rating by A.M. Best, indicating that the company has a strong ability to meet its obligations to policy holders over a long period of time. In a separate review the same year, the Standard Analytical Service concluded that Kansas City Life compared favorably in its financial viability to the 25 largest life insurance companies in the United States. In the midst of the 2009 recession, Kansas City Life generated $10.7 million in net income, or $0.93 per share, a marked increase over 2008. Premiums from new sales in 2009 also increased more than 25 percent, led by sales of Kansas City Life term life insurance.

In recent years, as many insurance companies stopped offering return of premium and fixed secondary guaranteed universal life products, Kansas City Life not only continued to offer such product lines, but found these products, especially its Cashback Life and Life Protector Universal Life products, to be among the most popular among consumers.
