State Farm Insurance was founded in 1922 by an Illinois farmer named George Jacob "G.J." Mecherle. Mecherle went to his local insurance agent for an auto insurance rate quote and didn't like the price. Mecherle argued that farmers drove slower and were involved in fewer accidents than people who lived in the City. He explained this to his insurance agent and was told to start his own insurance company. Mecherle went on to form State Farm Automobile Insurance Co. and the rest is history.
Since 1942, State Farm Insurance has been the largest insurance company in the United States offering policies for State Farm term life insurance, auto insurance and other insurance products.
Within three years of opening up the first State Farm Insurance agency, State Farm boasted 175 agents. Today, there are over 17,000 agents and over 65,000 employees who service over 77 million insurance policies in both the US and Canada from it's sprawling three building complex in Bloomington, Ill. According to the Fortune Global 500, State Farm is the world's largest mutual property & casualty insurance company in the world. State Farm term life insurance is just one of the many products State Farm offers its customers.
State Farm Insurance offers many types of insurance, including auto insurance, homeowner's insurance, financial services and State Farm term life insurance. State Farm insurance became a household name and their "Like a Good Neighbor, State Farm is There" campaign even featured 1970's recording artist, Barry Manilow, who wrote and performed the song for TV commercials which aired around the nation. State Farm term life insurance was introduced and in 1986, passed the 100 billion dollar mark, a number that had only been half as high only five years earlier.
The 90's saw many catastrophic events around the world. State Farm's volunteers helped those in need in the wake of the Northridge Earthquake, Hurricane Andrew, and the California Wildfires. State Farm is in partnership with many State Highway agencies and implemented the State Farm Safety Patrol which offers roadside assistance to its customers.
State Farm is managed by CEO Edward B. Rust, Jr., the third generation of the Rust family to run the business, and members of the Mecherle Family still work on the management team for State Farm. Rust's grandfather, Adlai Rust, was GJ Mecherle's attorney and worked alongside him in the development of State Farm in the early years.
